TRANSLATIONS

Nowadays, almost every business in the world is looking for internationalization (to do transactions with companies from other countries in order to earn more money). The problem for these companies starts, when they do not have multilingual employees. To give a solution to this situation, there are two alternatives:

The first one is going to a translation agency. Their workers can do a professional translation correctly. Usually, people who work for these agencies did not only study languages, most of them also studied translation. This knowledge allows them to solve grammar and vocabulary differences – which will always exist – in a correct way, avoiding changing the original meaning of the text, which is really the main purpose of a translation.

A translation agency must have several people to translate and each person does it in the language he/she knows. For example, a person whose mother-tongue language is Spanish and who can also speak English can only do Spanish translation from Spanish or English. It is not possible to translate a text from or to any other languages. If that is the case, it has to be done by other translator.

The second option is hiring a freelance translator. Many professionals prefer to have a Job freelance because it allows them to organize their time better. An important point to mention is that translations are not the only field where freelancers can work; it is one of the most popular though.

There are some aspects worth considering before deciding to be a Freelancer.
  • They have to look for their own clients and organize everything by themselves (Time, payments, taxes, etc).
  • The number of projects per month is very irregular; as a result, they do not receive the same amount of money every month.
  • They do not have any benefits like, health insurance or paid vacations.
  • On the other hand, there are some positive aspects as well:
  • They receive all the money for their work. Translators in translation agencies only receive a percent of the payment.
  • Freelancers can choose their clients and their projects, so if they are not sure about being able to do a project, they can reject it.
  • They can organize their time and do the work when and where they can, no matter where they are. All they need is a computer and internet access and they are ready to start working. They do not go to offices so they do not have strict schedules.
Regardless what the company chooses: a translation agency or the freelance translator; it pays good money to get a translation done, due to its importance for the relationships between the company and possible partner. A mistake in the translation can affect the whole negotiation, therefore companies will look for the best to do them and obviously pay what they ask.
